Nick van Woert
Nick is a good friend of mine, he has a large sculpture studio in Greenpoint. I visited him on a weekday afternoon in January to check out what he's working on. He builds his work from various salvaged materials; wood, metal, plaster, plastic etc... He welds, melts, cures, shreds, and plates these materials into sculptures that seem to mimic the industrial environment surrounding him. He also builds motorcycles and bicycles from the ground up, not to sell, but simply for the joy of honing his engineering abilities. Dead Horse Bay
Dead Horse Bay is a beach in a small bay on the eastern outskirts of Brooklyn. The land used to be an animal rendering plant. The New York Times explains “From the 1850s until the 1930s, the carcasses of dead horses and other animals from New York City streets were used to manufacture glue, fertilizer and other products at the site. The chopped-up, boiled bones were later dumped into the water.” Trash that never decomposed leaches up from the sand. There are tons of old glass bottles, leather shoes, animal bones, automotive parts and machinery; you are always one step away from a case of tetanus. It's a great place to scavenge for antique bottles and old weathered knickknacks. It is accessible by heading east on Flatbush Avenue to Aviation Road, then a short hike through a trail of reeds.
